A Note from Cass

After nine incredible years, Small Data has officially closed for business, and the Canyon Media Art Conservation Center has been born.

Back when I quit my day job and hung my shingle, I had no idea if it would work or if I would be bankrupt in a few months. What followed was years of working with an astonishing constellation of artists, museum professionals, archivists, foundations, and collectors. Running a business taught me more than I ever could have imagined, and the work was deeply rewarding.

Eventually, though, I found the limits of what impact a private practice could have on the broader, systemic challenges media art poses within the art world. I decided that a new kind of entity for time-based media conservation was critically needed—one that could fund research and development, support education, and provide affordable services to those without institutional resources.

I am so deeply grateful for everyone who entrusted Small Data with their collections and archives over the years, and for those who cheered us along.

I hope you will follow along on the new adventure that is Canyon, and CMACC!

With gratitude,
